The Fundamentals of Baccarat
Baccarat is one of the most straightforward casino card games, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced players. The game utilizes six to eight standard decks of 52 playing cards, with card values calculated as follows: cards 2-9 retain their face value, 10s and face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) are worth zero, and Aces are valued at one point. The objective is simple: bet on which hand—the Player's or the Banker's—will be closer to a total of nine points.
The game begins with players placing their bets on three possible outcomes: Player win, Banker win, or a Tie. Once bets are placed, both the Player and Banker receive two cards dealt from the shoe. Hand totals are calculated by summing card values and taking only the last digit of the sum. For example, a hand containing a 7 and an 8 totals 15, but only the 5 counts toward the hand value.
Drawing rules are predetermined and automatic, removing any element of player decision-making during gameplay. If either hand totals 8 or 9 with the initial two cards, this is called a "natural" and no additional cards are drawn. Otherwise, specific drawing rules determine whether a third card must be dealt to either hand based on the current total.
